From our Project Director, Lauren Townsend

I am excited to tell you about a grant that Philadelphia NOW has received to do a voter education, registration and get-out- the- vote (GOTV) project this fall:  Philadelphia Latina Vote 2006.

Philadelphia NOW intends to focus on Latina/o voters with a particular emphasis on Latina single women and the issues about which they care in the most heavily Latino/a populated 10 divisions of Philadelphia’s 7th District (7th and 19th wards).

We learned lots in the 2004 election about the Latino Community and about Single Women.  Both groups are traditionally underrepresented in elections yet both groups care deeply about issues like healthcare, after school programs, social services, crime and community stability.

WITH YOUR HELP, Philadelphia NOW will:

•           Use Women’s Voices Women Vote as a resource to ID single women in these 10 divisions.

•           Identify local feminist volunteers from within NOW and outside NOW who will volunteer to canvass these precincts doing voter education, registration and mobilization of Latinos with a special emphasis on Latina single women

•           Build a committee and campaign plan with volunteers recruited

•           Canvass the 10 divisions IDed, and develop other outreach mechanisms.  Canvasses will occur on evenings and on weekends.

•           Do GOTV in this November’s election

Philadelphia NOW member, Lauren Townsend is staffing this project and needs your help!  If you can help with research, outreach, and canvassing door-to door, please be in touch with me or with Lauren at 215-939-7621 or Laurent@rcn.com.

Native Spanish speakers and those who can speak basic Spanish are a plus!!! However if you are interested in this project and don’t speak Spanish, there is plenty that you can do.

If you are excited about this campaign, we need to hear from you TODAY!
